Tiken Jah Fakoly, born Doumbia Moussa Fakoly on June 23, 1968, in Odienné, Côte d'Ivoire, is an acclaimed reggae musician, songwriter, and human rights advocate. Renowned as a leading voice in contemporary African reggae, Fakoly has spent nearly four decades blending classic Jamaican roots rhythms with traditional West African instrumentation to critique political corruption, autocracy, and socioeconomic inequality.
Fakoly began his professional artistic journey in 1987 with the formation of his first ensemble, Djelys. By the late 1990s, his sharp commentary on the Ivorian political climate established him as a prominent spokesperson for marginalized youth. The explicit nature of his activism led to severe security risks, culminating in his political exile to Bamako, Mali, in 2003. Operating from Mali, Fakoly expanded his international career, earning a prestigious French Victoires de la Musique award for his breakthrough album "Françafrique" and collaborating with global artists across various genres.
Throughout his career, Fakoly has maintained a substantial global touring presence and released highly successful projects, including "African Revolution" and "Braquage de pouvoir". Parallel to his recording career, he remains heavily invested in grassroots development. Through his ongoing humanitarian campaign, "One Concert, One School," he utilizes his international performance earnings to fund and construct educational infrastructure in rural West African communities.
Fakoly’s enduring legacy rests on his dual contribution as a pioneer of the "Black Alternative" reggae movement and a dedicated advocate for continental consciousness and educational empowerment.
